European Electrical Industry Forecast to 2025

Schneider Electric, leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, recently published its 2025 predictions for the electrical industry in the UK and Ireland.

David Williams, Vice President, UK&I Trading at Schneider Electric, shares his thoughts on three key trends for the coming year.

1. more accessible technology will be key to addressing the skills gap in the electrical industry

“Rapid advances in technology are leading to a growing skills shortage in the electrical industry, which is impacting productivity and growth. It is estimated that by 2030, 20% of the UK's workforce (6.5 million people) will be severely under-skilled, so the expertise of engineers will be vital.

2. customer budget constraints will mean more retrofit projects, not brushback

“Customers recognize the need to modernize outdated electric infrastructure to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and help them meet their sustainability goals.

Budget constraints will make retrofitting the preferred option for many over the next 12 months. It is important for contractors to meet the immediate needs of their customers to improve energy efficiency, but it is also important to consider the long-term benefits of the equipment selected and the potential return on investment over time.

3. new regulations will make active safety even more important.

“Wiring regulations in the UK are being updated to improve safety and energy efficiency. These updates include Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD) for protection against electrical hazards and changes to Part L, which focuses on energy efficiency in buildings. As a result, there is a growing demand for smart connected solutions that help monitor energy usage, manage maintenance and reduce costs through better visibility and remote control.
